Michigan University Streamlines Student and Faculty Onboarding with Microsoft Intune

Quick Stats

  • Industry: Higher Education
  • Legacy Process: Manual device onboarding and offboarding
  • New System: Microsoft Intune with automated enrollment and management
  • Timeline: Completed prior to academic year launch
  • Key Outcomes: Time savings, reduced IT overhead, standardized configurations, improved inventory visibility

Client Overview

A Michigan-based university serving thousands of students and faculty across multiple campuses. Each academic year, the IT team was responsible for onboarding and offboarding hundreds of devices, from tablets and smartphones to laptops and computer labs.

The Challenge

The university’s IT staff had to configure devices manually, a time-consuming process that:

  • Consumed staff resources during peak onboarding season
  • Created inconsistent configurations across student and faculty devices
  • Led to a high number of support tickets from misconfigured systems
  • Limited visibility into device inventory and asset management

The Solution

We deployed Microsoft Intune to automate device management for students and faculty. The project included:

  • Automated enrollment and configuration for tablets, laptops, smartphones, and labs
  • Standardized security policies and application deployments
  • Automated offboarding workflows for device reassignment at year-end
  • Centralized inventory and real-time device visibility through the Intune console

The Outcomes

  • Time Savings – Significantly reduced manual effort during annual onboarding and offboarding
  • Reduced IT Overhead – Lowered the number of support tickets and freed up IT staff for strategic initiatives
  • Standardization – Consistent application of required software and security policies across all devices
  • Improved Inventory Visibility – Enabled accurate and real-time tracking of all devices in use by students and faculty

The Results

The university successfully transformed its annual device management process. With Intune, IT staff streamlined operations, improved consistency, and gained better oversight of assets, all while reducing support overhead. The institution is now better positioned to support students and faculty with reliable, secure, and standardized technology.
